JMT Day 1 – Ducks Pass To Purple Lake
I hiked about 11 miles with an initial 1700′ climb from the Duck’s Pass Trail Head near Lake Mary. There were many day hikers with Duck’s Lake as their destination. What a workout – the first day kicked my butt with an obscenely heavy pack (42 pounds). So much for “ultralight” backpacking. Ill have to do some serious weeding out of my pack when I reach JMTR on day 4. My left calf muscle cramped-up on the down hill when my hiking pole became lodged between a rock. Both hiking pole and my leg seem to OK tonight. I didn’t eat much tonight as I have a little altitude sickness (slightly nauseous and light headed). I camped alone about 300′ above the outlet from purple lake near another couple who I think were stealth camping closer to the trail but still out of sight. There was a cool breeze this evening with no mosquitos.
